INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED

Kahlúa Coffee Liqueur

Kahlúa is the most popular, classic coffee liqueur for a White Russian. Made with rum and real coffee beans, Kahlúa provides a sweet and slightly bitter coffee flavour that forms the backbone of the cocktail. We think its syrupy consistency also adds a nice body to the drink. When it comes to taste, Kahlúa has a smooth combination of coffee, vanilla and chocolate hints that complement the creaminess of your White Russian, while the sweetness also balances out the strength of the vodka. That’s why we strongly feel Kahlúa is the most natural fit. Get more info and find buy options on our Kahlúa Products page .

Absolut Vodka

The vodka adds an alcohol punch to your White Russian without adding too much flavour, allowing the coffee and cream to shine. We prefer Absolut Vodka because of its clean and neutral profile that helps perfectly balance the sweetness of the Kahlúa and the richness of the heavy cream. That said, if you don’t have Absolut on hand, feel free to experiment with other brands since this drink doesn’t rely on a specific flavour from the vodka. Or if you don’t like vodka, you can try the Mexican White Russian with tequila.

Heavy cream

This gives your drink its creamy indulgence. Heavy cream adds a luxurious, rich texture and balances out the strong flavour of the Kahlúa coffee liqueur and the sharpness of the vodka. Creating a smooth and mellow mouthfeel. In our experience, heavy or full cream is best, but some of our friends prefer full-fat or plant-based cream or milk. It’s up to your personal preference. For a lighter option, try half-and-half, or for an even lighter alternative, you can even use milk. But we think it doesn’t taste as decadent. For a dairy-free option, you can use almond milk, coconut milk or oat milk. Our personal favourite is oat milk since it mimics the creamy texture well and still creates that dramatic marbled effect.

Ice

It helps create a smooth, balanced White Russian by keeping it chilled and ensures the cream and alcohol mix well. Ice also slightly dilutes the drink as it melts. We’ve tried all types of ice over the years and strongly recommend using large ice cubes for this cocktail instead of small pieces that may make the drink dilute faster. But as always, we say just use what you have at home.

TOOLS YOU’LL NEED

Glass

The traditional glass to use for a White Russian is a rocks glass or an Old Fashioned glass. We usually use a short tumbler glass, which does the job. We won’t hold it against you if you use another type of glass, as long as it’s not too big for the amount of ingredients in the recipe. Our pro tip is to pre-chill the glass before serving the drink to stop the ice from melting too fast and diluting the drink.

Jigger or Measuring Tool

This is for measuring the equal parts of the Kahlúa, Absolut Vodka, and heavy cream in your White Russian. If you don’t have a specific tool at home, our tip is to simply use a tablespoon, shot glass or a measuring cup instead.

Stirrer or Bar Spoon

You’ll need this to gently mix your White Russian without disturbing the layering too much. Yes, we know not everyone has a bar spoon at home, so you can simply use a teaspoon with a long handle to slowly stir the drink.

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT WHITE RUSSIAN AT HOME

Creating the perfect White Russian is simple and only takes a few steps. Follow our guide for a smooth, creamy cocktail, every time:

OUR TOP WHITE RUSSIAN TIPS
1. Use large ice cubes.

Your White Russian is meant to be sipped slowly and indulgently, so it’s important that the ice doesn’t melt too quickly. That’s why we recommend using larger ice cubes that will melt slower and not make your drink too watery.

2. Chill glass & ingredients.

We recommend pre-chilling your glass before you serve to stop the ice from melting too fast and diluting your White Russian. To do this, simply put your glass in the freezer for a few minutes before preparing your cocktail. We also suggest chilling your ingredients in the fridge before, you’ll also have a consistent temperature and better blend of flavours. This also means you won’t need an excessive amount of ice.

3. Layer cream using back of spoon.

To give your White Russian that classic, marbled look, our best tip is to slowly pour the cream over the black of a spoon into the glass. Make sure it’s the last ingredient you pour since it makes the cream float on top before it mixes. But we do recommend you give it a slight stir before sipping, which brings us to our next tip.

4. Stir to taste.

This is to evenly mix your White Russian ingredients and really bring those delicious flavours and colours to life, since heavier liquids tend to fall to the bottom of the glass. Our tip is to stir less if you prefer a bolder coffee-vodka taste, or more for a smoother blend. Feel free to experiment.

5. Substitute for heavy cream.

If heavy cream feels too rich for your White Russian, we found that swapping it out with milk or half-and-half works well for a lighter option. You can even try a dairy-free substitute like coconut cream or almond milk. As mentioned earlier, our favourite plant-based alternative is oat milk since it gives your cocktail a similar creamy and indulgent texture.

WHY IT’S CALLED A WHITE RUSSIAN – HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

The White Russian gets its name from one of its main ingredients – vodka. This was due to vodka’s association as a traditionally Russian spirit. In fact, this deliciously creamy cocktail actually evolved from its older and darker sibling, the Black Russian. Which is basically a simple mix of Kahlúa and Absolut Vodka. Here’s our favourite Black Russian Recipe. Now, just add cream, and you’ve got yourself a delicious White Russian. Both of these classic and popular cocktails of ours have a special place in our heart and are loved around the world.

Now for a quick history lesson. The story of both the White Russian and Black Russian began in 1949 at a hotel in Brussels, Belgium. They were created to honour the then-U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg. Fast-forward to 1998, and the White Russian saw a surge in popularity thanks to its iconic appearance in a cult classic movie. (We’ll let you guess which one)

Even though it has had its ups and downs in popularity, especially when lighter or trendier drinks took the spotlight, the White Russian has always been a staple for us. Its rich, creamy flavour combined with the simplicity of our recipe with only three ingredients make it a quick-to-prepare and delightful treat.

Thanks to its indulgent, dessert-like qualities and its cult status as a movie icon, the White Russian continues to be a cocktail with timeless appeal.

Leftover Kahlúa: The possibilities of what you can do with Kahlúa are endless. Kahlúa Original has a shelf life of about 4 years before the coffee taste starts to fade and it starts losing the flavour impact. We love using Kahlúa in other Drink Recipes or Bakes to make more treats. Here’s an idea, pour a shot of Kahlúa over a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a quick dessert with the Kahlúa Affogato. You can also drizzle heavy cream on top for extra indulgence. Or make a slushie with the Frozen White Russian. But our favourite Kahlúa cocktail recipe is the Espresso Martini.

Leftover vodka: Absolut Vodka will last for many years, so there’s no shortage of uses. We suggest trying some of our Espresso Martini Variations or use it in a Black Russian. If you’re not feeling for a cocktail, you can use the Absolut Vodka to make a creamy vodka pasta sauce by mixing vodka with tomato sauce, cream and Parmesan cheese. It’s a deliciously rich sauce that goes great with penne or rigatoni.

Leftover heavy cream: Most heavy creams will last about a month in the fridge after opening, which gives you plenty of time to try our delicious Kahlúa and Cream Recipe. Or even some of our other favourite Kahlúa and Cream Drinks. There’s lots of other ways too. We love using our leftover heavy cream to make whipped cream! You can sweeten it with sugar and vanilla extract, and use it as a topping for desserts, hot cocoa or coffee, Or add a splash of heavy cream to your coffee or tea for a rich and velvety homemade coffee creamer. All of them sound yum!
